I have a page with a few tabs, which when clicked display different information as the main body of the page. Some of the tabs have linksembadded in the information. I want the user to be able to use click a tab, click a link, then push the back button to return to the original page and have the same tab reappear. Is there any way to detect if a user came to a page using the back button?

You should be able to use a log analyser in order to ascertain that.

Also, many visitor tracking programs will do it too.

Yes. But it is a bit convoluted. You will need to manage the user behavior when they are in your pages using things like session ids and server side cookies.

If it's just the tabs, change your navigation to hash the URL and light it up whenever the page (or it's children) appear. Sounds like you could probably use the same hash you're already using to display the content.
