Just downloaded the latest version of the 'free' Opera browser, and found that it optionally uses AdSense ads, rather than standard banners. In browsing my own site with Opera set up to use AdSense I noticed two things...

1) Defaults are served up far less often, the targeting seems to actually be a little better. I wonder if this is due to something server-sde, or code within Opera itself. I'd definitely like to know/see more of the same; I'm seeing between 25% & 30% defaults on my site, it's killing me.

2) Opera serves up it's own banner instead of a default.

The second is probably #1 on my own wishlist for AdSense - the ability to specify one's own defaults. I think that this is an essential for any ad network - regardless of the type of network.

This could either be implemented as a way to specify a group of text ads that would be served up in the case of a default situation - or ideally, the ability to specify Rich Media defaults.

Anyone else eager to have a default setup within AdSense?

Very strangely, shortly after I posted the above, I updated the AdSense code on the part of my site that was recieving the most defaults. All I did (as far as I'm aware) is select a different colour scheme (4, actually), and suddenly I saw about 95% less defaults.

The targeting of some pages is still off, but I'd rather have semi-decent targeting and a paid ad than a default any day.

At any rate, I'd still love to see a default mechanism added to AdSense. smile

Is anyone else seeing a large number of defaults today? It's like AsSense has forgotten what my sites are about. Hm.

Ah-ha! Perhaps this was happening due to testing of a new feature. Just got an e-mail from Google (as I'm sure all AdSense publishers did); hhere's an excerpt:

ALTERNATE ADS

Second, we've introduced an 'Alternate Ad' feature to your account. This new feature allows you to monetize your ad space in the event that Google is unable to serve targeted ads to your page. From the 'Ad layout code' page, enter the URL of a static image, clickable image, or ad server, and AdSense will load your ad instead of Public Service Ads (PSAs). Should you choose not to specify your own ads, PSAs will continue to be served to your page.

Hat's off to Google for that. I'm quite happy. smile
