My homepage is 56k....this is obviously above the 40k mark that is suggested. How can you minimize the space that pictures take so that more can fit on the page without making it too slow to load? Tennis-warehouse.com, for example loads very quickly and has as many or more pictures than we do on our site.....but ours is twice as slow? Any ideas? Can they be compressed? Thanks for the advice!

JPEG (the .jpg images on your site) is actually a form of image compression. If you wan't to compress it more for a smaller file size, it will take away some of the clarity and quality of the image; in the same respect, if you want to make it look even better, it will make the image larger. You could try compressing all the images a little bit more and hopefully not lose too much quality if you really think there is a need for it. Other options to save load time would be to remove some of the images of words and replace them with normal text (like on the top navigation).

Downsizing the actual pysical size of the image will reduce the down load time as well. I use the HVS (human visual system) plugin for photoshop but it has now been discontinued. This helps to reduce the file size as much as possible but retain the best quality by removing what is unneseccary for the human eye. (you need great quality images to start with of course).

Make sure you're using the right format for graphics. Solid colour images with no gradients, shadowing etc should be exported as gifs. Images with all the above should be jpg's.
Of course, the best of all possible worlds would be if Microsoft fixed IE so it could use PNG.
