hi,
How would you go about designing this nav bar (http://www.kazaa.com/us/images/nav_www_home.gif) in photoshop? Dont get me wrong i'm not looking to copy it i just like the way it presents and would like to do something simialr on my website.
Any help greatly appreciated... Thanks in advance

Hi Bob,
Have you tried any of the Photoshop user´s sites? There are hundreds of tutorials out there and though none may be exactly the kazaa nav bar you will most likely be able to find a few which relate to the overall style.

Most of the advanced graphics that you see designed in photoshop are a series of layers. Put together, layers can create some pretty special effects including color & hue changes, pattern or gradient overlays, edges, shadows and pretty much anything you can think of.
In this particular case, that bar isn't that tough to create in photoshop.
First, I would create a transparent background to work on. Then create a new layer in photoshop. Choose the 'rectangle' tool and pick a colour to work with. Draw a rectangle roughly the size that you want. Click on the layer in your edit window and click on the 'fill properties' button. Choose 'gradient overlay' and pick a nice linear gradient in whatever color you want. You can also add in a an outline in a darker shade to give it a bit of sparkle.
Next, you'll need to make some buttons. Create another new layer and then choose a shape. If you wanted buttons like the one on the KaZaa bar you would choose a 'rectangle' but make sure to edit the radius portion to get a rounded edge. Make one rectangle as big as the size of the button you want. Head on down the 'edit' menu to the skew feature and tilt your rectangle. Click on the layer in the menu and click on the fill properties. You can select to have the shape 'indent' by using the Bevel & Emboss feature and using something like a 'pillow emboss'. You can also create some different looking buttons by doing the same things with the custom shape tool.
Once you have the button looking the way that you want it to, all you have to do is select the button layer and then choose Layer > Duplicate layer. Do this for as many buttons as you need and you'll get several copies of your shape.
You could use the 'text' tooltip to add labels to your buttons in photoshop but using actual html 'text' is usually better if you can.
Photoshop can be fun if you like to play around with special effects and stuff. There is a learning curve, but once you tackle it you're set. 
Some of the best tutorials are found on the adobe site itself. Actually if you want some special effects for some of your stuff, and aren't sure how to create all of the layers and effects yourself, try Adobe Exchange. You can download and install 'actions' which will do all of the work for you.
