I want my site layout to be similar to that of gamebattles.com but i dont have a clue maybe i aim too high for my limited experience in web design i dunno so ive come here looking for advise and maybe some help if theres anyone willing to help a new designer out.

What kind of help exactly? Its not like I can tell you how to use Photoshop or something. Your best bet is probably to at least get the overall layout done and look through some numerous Photoshop Tutorials online to eventually build up your graphics to the point where you like them. I have learned quite a bit through doing searches on GOOGLE for photoshop tutorials.
I did a search on "adobe photoshop tutorials" in google and found tons of them. You'll have to sift through the good tutorials from the bad, but that should give you start.
The thing is that there are a plethra amount of work that is fairly well documented online. You just have to know where to look. WebmasterForums.com is a good place to go for help as well

I've run into situtaions like this before, and what I did was taking screenshots of the page, assembling all the shots together to make a FULL view of every part of the site. Make it's opacity low and design my own graphics on top of it. Thus you r deriving from them and not copying from them.
