    Here is a unique one.

A client wrote a book that was published but just not doing well. The content was great just no sales.

Sooooo we decided to try splitting up the sections of the book and converting the written content into web pages. The client already had a high PR website so we thought we could just expand it with the new content.

I did not know this until after we created the web pages but the client had also posted the book to Google Books. So if you do a search for the books title its there, all of it.

    The question is:
Is it ok to have a books content you authored in both web page and Google Books format? Could we instruct Google to remove the book allowing us to focus on its conversion to web? Any advice on how best to deal with this is appreciated.

    Thank you! :D

my understanding is that the first site to post the content owns the copyright it in the eyes of google, so your site would be counted as duplicate content and penalized accordingly

If you had put it on your site before google got it, you would not be facing a dupe penalty

Thanks MJ. I hope this is not the case because we put a lot of work to convert this to the web. I wonder if there would be no penalty if we requested the book be removed from Google Books.

well, you could make the pages and then added the no index tag or add the folder to your disallow in your robots file

Remember not in all cases is who posted the content first. whoever displays the content most relevant is who gets the credit for it.
I can tell you this is true, since I am the SEO for a big article publishing company and I have seen that even articles that we get from other sources as long as I make the article better in the search engines eyes, I am the one that gets the top 10 ranking, and the article provider way behind me in the rankings.
Many elements need to be considered here, but the trick is "relevancy"
    Hope this helps

thats good to know, but the owner can then lose control of his own work, and then anyone who knows the techniques to do what you can do, can steal anyones ranking.

Is this a black hat, unethical, or anything goes in the search engine wars technique?

His issue is a little different because his content wasn't used by another site, it got used by google itself as an ebook.

E-mail Google, ask for clarification. It may take time, but you'll have the answer you need. I am only speculating here, but Google may not even apply a penalty, they would likely just drop one of the content bodies (meaning site listings or book listing) out of the search results for related searches. I would suspect, back to the relevancy idea mentioned before, the one deemed most relevant would remain.
