Question for the experts. We have a competitor that has some domain names that are essentially keywords such as sandiegomovers.net. But if you type in this domain, you get a quick redirect to their real website. They are not hosting their real website on this other domain, it is just an instant redirect.
Does this help them with Google? Does it hurt them? What purpose is this other website if it is not their real one and only has a redirect?
The reason I ask is that I have several similar domains I would like to do the same thing with but don’t know if there are any negative ramifications.
Thanks for your advice.

In most cases, it only helps them by denying those domain names to potential rivals; often a worthwhile exercise, and it may get some type-in traffic. If the redirected site previously had some 'value', such as some quality incoming links, then there may be some added benefit - at least for a short while.
No harm or risk at all, provided you use the 301 permanent redirect.

If all the domains directly resolved to content, then that would be a duplicate content problem.
By using the redirect, only one domain can be indexed, and only that one will rank.
However, the site still gets traffic from people who directly type in those names, or who have mis-spelt what they intended to type in (it is a good idea to buy up and redirect "close" names).
One of the names might be used purely in print advertising for example. It is then very easy to measure how many people came to the site as a direct result of seeing that advert and reacting to it by typing in the URL.
