So I was wondering what the difference was with inputting the following queries in google were:

    link:www.domain.com

    and

    www.domain.com -site:www.domain.com

The reason why I ask this is because I am using different SEO tools that tell me the statistics of backlinks and they show me different numbers. So when I checked what the queries were in google those came up. Each of them shows completely different numbers and I don't know which one to base my stats on.

Google only ever shows some 5% to 10% of the links that they actually know about.

Yahoo shows a much better list, but don't go chasing links. There's better things to be doing.

I just need it for my clients. They want to be updated with how much they have huh I just don't know which one to base them off of. I can't decide because they show a huge gap between those two queries.

You'll do much better with Yahoo! - or Google's webmaster stuff.

Neither of those two queries are useful, consistent or reliable. And that's a Google policy, not an accident! smile

Seo tools does not give accurate result for the site. You may check it manually by using this commands
    link:www.domain.com
    Results 1 - 10 of about 11,800
    site:www.domain.com
    Results 1 - 10 of about 340 from www.domain.com.
Using of this command in checking this backlinks is almost the same in your statistics.
    link:www.domain.com

Both tools base their results on those 2 queries so it is basically the same thing.
