I had to put a verification code on my index.htm page for google so I can submit a site map. That is all done.
Now do I remove that code or leave it there.
Google says nothing one way or the other. I assume I leave it so they can "find" me again when I do the site map?

Leave it there. Google will check it periodically.

After a period of about 6 months, you will need to replace it with a new one. Google will tell you when.

much appreciated Hampstead. I assume I will be given a different code per site and to do the same thing with each?

Yeah, each website has its own unique code.
