I noticed that in my Google account where I submitted a site map that I have the option to verify my URL. From what I understand Google doesn't deem this to be necessary except to enable a person to utilize other features.
Pesonally, I don't like the idea of doing this because I don't want to add more code to my website. But what I want to know is if it would help me with my rankings if I verified it.
If someone who knows a lot about this could explain this feature to me I would appreciate it.

Not all sites benefit from a site map (some just don't need it).
However, most people will benefit from the extra features - and that will likely increase over time.
Think of the the verification code as slightly less useless that most meta tags - and an important security feature. It won't hurt a bit.
If you really prefer not to, then don't bother with an xml sitemap (not a lot of point); go with an HTML sitemap that visitors can use as well as spiders.

If you verify your URL in Google Webmastertools (I do that by uploading the pre-named blank HTML file they ask you to upload to your own site) you can see all sorts of useful data about how Google accesses your site, how they interpret your robots.txt file, your incoming links, certain types of errors on your site, and so on. I don't upload an XML sitemap. The internal site navigation is already more than adequate, especially as it uses breadcrumbs.

Breadcrumb navigation makes it easier for bots and visitors to use your website, as well as ditributing PR.

So when you speak of 'breadcrumb navigation' you are referring to navigation that isn't image made, but rather text made?

Navigation that follows the folder path that you traversed, and allows you to jump back to any of the previous points.
