I've been scouting the internet for a while looking for an alternative to Google, and recently came across FindsYou, a 'reverse search engine' which although in its early stages, seems to offer a genuinely interesting alternative to the search engine giants of the world.

Can't post weblinks into these Forums, but I'm sure if you Google it (how ironic!), you'll be able to take a look... I'm keen to hear other people's thoughts on this, and whether they are similarly excited by the idea...

It seems awfully complicated compared to the simplicity of Google.

Why would anyone want to fill in all these forms just to find (eg) what's on at the Cinema?

    Don't forget

    (a) Google took over the world on the strength of quick, simple searches from a clean, uncluttered page.

    (b) KISS

I'm sure your 'find' has a niche market - but you'll destroy even that if you continue to compare it to Google; there's really no comparison!

Okay, so maybe the comparison was just to get people's attention smile

Google is v good for finding out what's on at the cinema. But is it good for finding goods and services - I'd argue not... it tends to find all of your biggest brands, but often very little else - especially when it comes to 'local' services... If i want a nearby plumber, for example, am I really going to be able to find it on Google? I may even struggle to find the person I'm looking for using classified ads sites, because again, they're prioritised based on who's paying them the most...

I like FindsYou because it's designed as a level playing field - for people who know what it is they want, it seems like a great idea.

Typing [plumber town urgent] in Google is much quicker and easier than faffing about with your 'find' for ten minutes.

There's really no point developing things 'because you can' - that has lead to 45k metasearch engines that no-one uses.

Start with the user; develop something that makes their life easier - that's a 'great idea'

Remember the old saying "Build a better mousetrap, and the world will beat a path to your door"

Make a more complicated one that doesn't work so well, despite the clever clever ideas, and people won't buy. Trust me.

Google won't last forever, just as Alta Vista didn't; but it won't be slain by gimmicks and dishonest marketing - it'll be beaten by someone making a better search engine.

Back to the drawing board, Mr. Doesn'tFindsYouVeryEasily wink

Did you actually try posting something? Your speed at replying suggests that you have no typing issues, so I'd be hugely surprised if it took you ten minutes to post a want.

I would say, just try it. Post something you want, but you can't find, and see what happens. It's not going to cost you anything, or take up more than three minutes of your time. If nothing happens, fine - point proven. But you never know smile

Actually I did try it, when I first read your first spam, er, sorry, post.

Once it was clear that it was not going to give me any useful information until I'd faffed about with three (more?) forms and then, after all that, I have to register.

I have to register to use a search engine?

    What planet are you on?

    If you seriously believe that

    (a) Your 'find' is in any way, shape, or form better than Google

    (b) Has a Snowball's chance in Hell of being successful,

Then I respectfully suggest you remove your head from your arse and get a job in another industry.

Sad really; if he'd cut the cr*p and told us what it really was, we could have had an interesting discussion ... mind you, once it's clear someone's spamming, rather than really wanting feedback, I don't look hard for the positives*

What this chap is really doing has more to do with classified ads than search - but even then, it's so complicated most users will die of old age before they've got it to work. And why would they bother, with so many alternative listings out there?

    *That's assuming there are any.
