    Hi,

I have a website that has pages with outdated content that are ranking very well with Google. I have new updated pages with similar content on my site but these pages are not ranking as well in Google.

    I have the following questions:
    (1) Is there a way I can update the content of these outdated pages without risking loosing the high google rankings?
    (2) Are the outdated pages that rank well in Google stopping my new web pages with similar content from ranking well?

Thank you so much for the help!
    SS

    1. there's really no guarantees; but if the content is on the same topic and broadly similar, the effect should not be huge ... but SEs assess each page on their merits, and rank them beside all the competitor pages.

    2. Check for yourself whether your old pages are above your new for keyword / key phrase searches - that's what counts!

But it's certainly possible; old and authoritative pages can pick up links of their own, and so can do better than similar pages from the same site.

So you have several factors to consider:

    A. The new pages will eventually age, and if they are of equal 'quality', then they too will gain some rank and authority of their own.

    B. If you are sure (really sure!), that the old pages are outranking new pages, then you could remove the old, and replace them with 301 permanent redirects to the new equivalents.

    C. You could use noindex on the old ages.

    D. You could stop adding new, and simply update old.

    E. If the 'old' pages are misleading or just plain wrong, then either remove them, or label them very clearly (with a link to a replacement), and make your navigation reflect the information in a useful and accurate way.

    F. Be sure that the new pages are not already too similar to the old; that may get them discounted on the 'duplicate content' rule.

    G. Whatever you do, do not lose touch with the visitor experience; if you do what's best for visitors, you'll usually find that you have also served the needs of the SEs too.
