The best way to improve your site rank is to continually add and update your content, AND to discuss your website with other people sharing the same keywords, trading links.
So for example, if you make crossbows, find every crossbow and archery site, and become friends with their webmaster. Agree to link to their site, and have them link to you.
Then start writing about related topics. Take every major keyword you have, and write a quality page talking all about it.
Do searches on every keyword you have, and check out the top 10 sites that come up for each word. Figure out what makes those sites good. Emulate their success, but DO NOT COPY their text. If you can, trade links with them.
If you take shortcuts, and trade links with web-spammers, you will get blacklisted. Only trade links with quality sites.

As for statistics, check out webalyzer, for analyzing your own page stats, and check out google analytics, to get a second point of view.

hi
you can check your site stats at www.your domain.com/webstats probably you may need a user name and password for that my experience is ftp login details works.
for increasing the site ranking there are many ways but suggestible method is white hat seo which includes link building, proper submissions in search engine, directory submission etc.

Another good stats program is Google Analytics ([url=http://www.google.com/analytics[/url]), it's free and fairly accurate, all you have to do is sign up and put a snippet of code on every page on your site (which is easier than it sounds)

How many link exchanges in rough might be required to get site rank 1 only?
Could you please clarify a bit?

There is no X number of links needed per place in the search engines as their placed on relativity rather than basic maths Algorithms.
If you build a quality site that is useful to people, you will get links and these will help you gain traffic from the search engines.

Err, I have seen PR 1 on sites with TWO incoming links.
It's not the number, but the quality - and relevance.

There are many factors controlling for any site to get good ranking in search engines.you should be aware about keyword analysis using best targeted keyword will reach your site topper.Meta keyword, description is the primary issue for your site. The next thing is you have to conscious about that if your site having any mirror site or not check it by copyscape if you will find any mirror site then you have to redirect it to the mail site immediately.Header/Footer link optimization needed. Those are the main features for optimization.
