I was scanning over the Google SEO page, and noticed a quote on the side that I had never noticed before:

"We have been on the internet since 1996 and had always taken a very conservative approach on our site. For nearly a year though, we were bombarded by emails from third party linking programs, which stressed the importance of linking for relevancy.

Finally, we broke down and joined one of these programs. Unfortunately, the program used hidden links, and Google removed us from the index within a week. I guess it's true that anyone can get fooled into buying snake oil."

    - Frank, owner of a limousine services company

I take this with a good laugh, but I must admit this is pretty insutling -- comparing search engine optimization to selling 'snake oil'. I would bet that a lot of the people that manage AdWords accounts are SEO/SEM's, if I was Google I would of never though of insulting the majority of my advertising base. A novel idea I guess.

Depends just what their "SEO" work actually entails, and whether they actually do it the way they say they will.

    Some don't.

The quote is trying to get something across that not all SEO is the right way especially when SEO firms send out spam to solicit work, make all sorts of promises, and use deceptive tactics like hidden links.

There is no insult there, just a warning to be careful about what you do to get ranks.

I feel there is no insult there. Looks like the guy who is quoted has been taken for a ride.

Any ideas how does Google keep tabs on SEOs? They say they don't have a relationship or do not offer any recommendations, but they sure will be watching the new tricks being employed .. possibly even watching posts in forums. SEOs try to offer ranking to their clients at the expense of a higher spend on AdWords .. but still are big influencers of ad spend on Google! Does Google have an organization to liaise with SEOs?

Google interacts with SEOs in online forums, discussion groups and at industry related conferences. They are well aware of the techniques used by most SEOs. (As demonstrated by their published guidelines.)

I don't think it was an intentional shot at SEOs, but I think the quote can be read and taken that way.
