Much as I would like to discuss the movie, I have another bone to pick with the real Bill that many would certainly like to kill. Allow me to paint you this picture.
So I get this trojan on my hard disk that some how snuck passed my "State of the art" Symantec AntiVirus, Version: 10.0.0.359.
This alien life form decides to lock up everything from the registry including all administrative tools.
I slave my disk somewhere else and do a quick back up of my (current) files. Tried to repair windows but the little critter still latched itself onto the registry. Got p****d and almost threw the puter out the window.
Finally I decide to format the disk and do a fresh installation, only this time, I create a multi-partition disk and install windows and linux (yes I know, I meant to do this ages ago but just didn't get around to it then this happens).
I try to decompress my (rar) archive and just when my morning couldn't get any worse, I get some silly The file "???" header is corrupt. At this point, I'm tempted to throw myself out the window.
But wait, it gets better.
I try to repair the archive with the repair fucntion in Winrar. Nothing. So I switch to my "Rar Repair Tool" and once again, Nothing.
Lessons Learned:
1. Ditch Symantec. Period.
2. Bill and his cronies must die.
3. Bill and his cronies MUST DIE.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can recover my archive? I'm past desperate.

Don't like Semantic for a couple reasons. Use AVG anti-virus.

I have the same hate relationship with both McAfee and F-Secure as I often see them playing silly buggers.
I ditched Norton a very long time ago for the same reasons, and both of those others since then.

Curt, I switched to Kaspersky instead (should have done this ages ago) and works like a charm.
Now that we've shared our love and hate issues for Bill and cronies, does ANYONE have ANY suggestions on recovery?

Hmmm, recovery of a corrupt file, wish I could help you there. The only thing I can say is to run a search on how to recover files for the particular errors you are seeing. Sorry can't be of more help there. I feel for yah 
Haven't heard of Kaspersky, but I'm glad you found something that works and that isn't mainstream crap like Norton.
AVG has been recommended here in the forums a few times by various individuals. I eventually installed AVG myself when Norton wouldn't install an update on my old puter. AVG has been good to me to date. Also have a major problem with Norton erasing google adsense ads from everyone's sites. With that, I hate Norton (and other similar packages that do the same).

This is the new (Russian) kid on the block in AV programs. Had a demo installed once a few months ago and was amazed at the number of viruses it sniffed out that Symantec didn't bother to catch. Don't be surprised if you notice any heavy marketing campaigns from Norton coz, the new kid has them shaking in their boots

Did all that before I posted and nothing seems to have worked so far. Hence the desperate plea

...we've been running it for almost 6 years now. Excellent product, yet somehow, it still manages to be a PITA from time to time...LOL

So is Kaspersky the program any of you are now recommending? Any other recommendations?
I've been using Antivir Guard but it has one issue I believe is unacceptable so I'm looking to change. It defaults to "access deny" instead of quarantine. That makes no sense to me. I asked them about that and they said "access deny" leaves the culprit on your system. Why would I want to do that?

As was stated, AVG from Grisoft has done good for me and has been very stable. If somehow an update gets corrupted during installation, it's very easy to fix by going to their site and downloading the latest full version which has a repair feature. I had to do this once after an update, but usually updates are not a problem. Updates for any anti-virus software can go corrupt during download and installation though I imagine it is rare for reliable AV (only happened once in the past 4 years with AVG anti-virus and was easy to fix).
You can get AVG Anti-virus software at www.grisoft.com . Grisoft makes AVG. They update the virus definitions daily as do many AV packages.

My use of Kaspersky is built on the back of my company using it, so I have a full sysadmin support team to monitor, set up and troubleshoot for me.
I recommend it to those who can manage it, but not having actually been anything other than and end user, I cannot say what's involved.

I'm not sure about daily updates, but certainly they are updated several times per week.
I also run both Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy every few weeks to see what they can find.

Had I known, I would have ditched Symantec ages ago.
