Variables that have been thought to affect ranks positively in the past
These factors may
change over time depending on the way the algorithm is programmed
• Keywords in the domain name
• Bolding keywords, e.g. <b>wooden boats</b>
• Using keywords in heading tags, e.g. <H4>Wooden Boats</H4>
• Keywords closest to the top of the page.
• Keywords in the description tag.
• Keywords in the keywords tag.
• Keywords in the names of linked pages and in the linked words, e.g. <a href="woodenboats">
wood-en boats</a>.
• Keywords in alt tags.
• Keywords as names of images, e.g. <img src="wooden-boats.gif alt="wooden boats">.
• Getting listings in Pay-Per-Click search engines like Google Adwords or Overture.

There is no alt tag. It is an attribute.
All of those factors, except the meta keywords tag, still play an important role in indexing and ranking, but there are a lot of other items that now also come into play.
The Ranking Factors list at SEOmoz is one of the more comprehesive lists, even if I don't agree with all of the "weightings" they assign to those factors.

It has been suggested in the past that PPC listings are not responsible for raising a site's rank in the natural SERPs. Has this now been observed to change or what?
