    where to start.. .. Okay. i make websites (is saying [link] allowed?). Full life cycle stuff for the past 8 years. This afternoon I find a job posting for a "SEO Consultant" (1) translate business goals into SEO campaigns (2) review websites for SE friendly design principles (3) making and maintaining SEO recommendations; (4) keeping SEO skills fresh. REQUIREMENTS: (1)"Must have demonstrated (nature seach) SEO experience!!" (2) Technical web expereicnes (ie. html, javascript, css) (3) knowledge of website design.. (4) Familiarity with Paid placement (5) WebTrends;

So I'm like, "Hey! I can do that! I just read search engine Visibility by Shari Thurow. And I have Speed Up Your Site and SEO for Dummies on the way! And I intro'd WebTrends to my last employer. And I can figure this stuff out!"

And then the cold specter of reality went through me as I looked here.. and there... I naively thought my years of WebMastery meant I could transition easily to a SEO Consultant. What I have found so far isn't as difficult as programming Java, but there's just a lot of it to go through! I figure if I am great at picking up enough of something new to be a Jill of All Trades, that concentrating on one discipline (SEO) would mean I could quickly gain expertise.

Or am I just fooling myself cuz I really want this job and move to where this job is?

Hi, it seems to me that they are looking for somebody with demonstrated experience, success & knowledge.

I don't want to put you on a downer, but if in your 8 years of web building you have not been implementing SEO as a natural (foundational) part of your development and seen the fruit of it in results, then this job may not be for you.

don't give up if it your dream to develop new skills and step into the SEO arena - your coding, design & dev skills will most certainly help you.

No, right. That's why I was attracted to the position in the first place. Since I thought I WAS using "SEO as a natural (foundational) part of [my] development." I actually surprised to find that people make a living JUST by doing SEO. I always thought it was part and parcel with making a website. What's the point of making one if nobody can find it?

But I hadn't gone far enough. NOW I know about Overture and searchengineforums.com -- and again, it doesn't look like a terribly hard skill set to pick up. So it would seem that i just need to take what i have already done, and expand upon it a bit before I present a tweaked resume for this position.

Is it belittling to think that this is as easy as it looks, but that the devil is in deceminating the details?

It's not necessarily easy - more like simple smile
the devil is in the confusion of voices trying to make it complex.

Another thing to keep in mind - SEO may be harder the more competitive the industry and the terms.

Hrmmm... and since the position is through a 3rd party recruiter I have no idea of the industry involved. OTOH, maybe it is various sites and various industries.

So where, then, is there NOT fluff. Where is there NOT the confusion of voices trying to make complex. I mean, besides HERE, of course. smile

What I did - read everything, everywhere and work out what I believed & what I didn't - to decide what worked for me. Experience & confidence is gained by implementation, trial & error, observation, adjustment & improvement. When you are successful you don't need to listen to the voices, except if you like a chuckle every now and then smile

I guess because there are many folks in this game that come from different angles and approaches it can become confusing - it sounds to me that you should start by improving your strengths - work on the on-page elements in order to improve optimisation efforts from the inside and then work your way out to external elements (off page factors).

You may need a "test" site - why not start with your own...or an existing client site you can use as a guinea pig.

Just some thoughts - hope they help.

with of course the problem being that i can't trial and error and expect to actually get the job at the same time. Everyone says/thinks something different, and unlike learning java or C# there aren't any tried and true methods (it would seem) to get to speed quickly on. *kicks at the dirt* nuts.

I know the feeling and I am sure THAT is not what you want to hear - sorry.

Try to think of it this way - Learn the skills & you WILL be ready for the next job that comes along and there are always SEO jobs smile
