Hello,
I am wondering how the following page works:
https:// www.web-a-file.com
It appears that it is instantly redirected to a regular page: https:// www.web-a-file.com/Redirect.cgi?html=index_template.html§ion=1
But, the root page has a lot of hidden keywords in it. This site has appeared near the top of all major search engines for "online file storage." Can I easily just replicate this? Is there more to it? I would appreciate an advice - I also have a budget if anyone has the time.
Thanks,
Aaron Levie

This is a classic case of "search engine spamming". That site shows the page to the search engines; the human visitors are redirected while the search engines are not because they don't follow javascript redirects.
You can view the source code of that page by viewing it through Rex Swain's Http Viewer.
That site also ranks well on Yahoo! because (according to Yahoo!) there's 52,600 links to the site.

since my main page is mainly images - for design reasons - should I try and do something like this? to me it doesn't feel that cheap since this is the business I am in and it is a relevent listing. I don't really know how important the text is on someone's site, I have elaborate meta tags, but nothing that can really be picked up by an engine from the body of my site...
thoughts?

Aaron, the javascript redirect on the main page of that site should be a 301 Permanent Redirect. They should change the default home page of the site to be the page that they're redirecting people to or put up a 301 Permanent Redirect from the main page to that other page.
Some of the search engines (mainly Google) see that main page as being spam since they're showing something to the search engines and redirecting the human visitors to another page. As far as I can tell, the human visitors never really see that main page at all, they just see the redirect.
I wouldn't do anything like what they're doing because it's very "spammy". Your main page shouldn't have any redirects on it at all--just show the human visitors and the search engines the content that they're supposed to get.
I don't suggest that your main page contain only images, it should contain indexable text and content, as much as possible.

I understand your frustration. But creating something that spams the search engines is not the answer--it will get your website banned/removed from the search engine altogether. You wouldn't want to do any redirects or hide any text on your site. All the text on your site should be text, not part of a graphic. Otherwise, the site is fine--I agree that you would not want to sacrifice the site design.
The bottom line is that you need more on-topic links to your site. That site you're referring to has 5940 links according to MSN and 53,700 links in Yahoo!. So, I would put any budget you have into building links to your site.

They will get found out and maybe will be dropped. Make sure you do your site well, and without spamming. When their site is dropped, you can take their spot. However, if you spam the same as them then you'll both be bounced....
