A client has a fairly large site that ranks extremely well (for months) with about 170 pages of content related to a specific product...say "football helmets" for example. They asked me if adding additional content (approxiamately 30 pages) in a directory for a new product "baseball helmets" would dilute their site's 100% "football helmets" theme, and negatively affect the strong "football helmets" rankings.
On one hand I think adding additional text content regardless of theme would be beneficial to most any site, especially when trying to get some visisbility for an additional set of kw's "baseball helmets" since the site is so well indexed already, and both products are "helmets".
On the other hand, I see their concern about diluting the theme, even slightly and the potential risk of losing the current strong rankings.
My gut feeling is that the new additional pages won't hurt the "football helmets" rankings, and may benefit the site as a whole. Please let me know what you think - I have never considered theme based relevancy from this point before, and am curious about others' ideas.

Hello - I think that as the two words that they feel may dilute their page are actually themed under sports (per your example) that you should advise them to go ahead...there seems to be overlapping themes that could work well for them.

Your football helmet pages will be safe. Google indexes and evaluates the content on pages.

I have seen many examples of pages that bask in the glory of well themed websites while having something but little in common.
