    Hello,

I manage a web site that sells aromatherapy products. I started exchanging links with other Natural Health Sites but my employers do not want me to exchange links now with any site that has a similar site on their links page.

If I go completely out of my link theme, say exchange with hotels around the world or something, will google and the other search engines penalize me for exchanging links with non related sites since my employers do not want me to exchange with relevant ones?

Their concept of closing a window in XP is to turn off the computer, Oy! What I have to work with.

hehe sounds pretty cool at your office! what are you doing eddie? 'well just saving my work' ... but what about those wires dude?

About the linktrading of your website: It doesn't matter what topic the website is about. It's the weight Google gives the website. A link on cnn.com is more relevant than one on splendidmedia.nl. Getting penalised is not an issue.

What gave you that idea? Let's go through a few things here:

    1. Website about Silver widgets from Nantucket. Lets say you got a good site well optimised, good copy and somewhat of a resource for widget enthusiast.

    2. Best one way links in are from... widget sites, local Nantucket business sites, sites and blogs from other silver widget enthusiast.

    3. Okay, you get your hands tied up by an employer who suddenly gets a hard-on for other widget sites and does not want to be affiliated with them for whatever reason.

    What are your options?

I would start by looking for sites that are themed around some of my other keywords, also I would research sites that would find a use for silver widgets, and there are so many possibilities that can fit around a theme. At times when I have been real stuck I ahve created a page or two that is closely related to the theme of the site and then gone and found sites to link to the fresh content that are related. In your case natural health, you have a whole arena of themes to link with.

Linking to hotels is not a good idea or anything for that matter which is not related. You get no favours for a link from a high ranked hotel at all; it has nothing to do with your subject matter. You will get some weight but quite frankly IMO it would not be worth the time and effort. You would be better off looking for sites that are related and please don’t go chasing the green PR bar, you can get some real good stuff out of pr2 sites that are close to your theme.

Go to a couple of directories that have a section for your type of work. Make sure they are good, do a back-link check on them. Cut back on reciprocal linking.

I'm not sure if anyone else here is noticing but reciprocal linking is not really working at all anymore, unless it's real good quality.
