Hello All,

For quite a few days I am hearing about this interesting extension .cd, it seems to a country extension for congo(not sure of the country) though.

'CD' can actually also stand for 'Compac Disc'

The extension '.cd' sounds to be interesting when attached with some of the top level keywords like music, videos, songs, images, etc which go extremely good with the extension.

So a songs[dot]cd or songs[dot]cd, music[dot]cd, image or an images[dot]cd are pretty usable and even very much brandable.

Though I am a bit orthodox and of the though that for website or a service '.com' is the only one, but as i mentioned above this extension seems to offer something.

Everyone has it's own views & ideas, what the domaining community thinks on to this?

What are your thoughts & how long do you thing this extension will go...

Your expert comments friends.

I can see the advantages of a .cd domain to do with music but for all else (outside the country) it's a bit of a fail. Especially with the announcement from ICANN that people can soon purchase any TLD they want, .abc, .xyz it'll be crazy sad

What do u think would top level .cd like songs[dot]cd or images[dot]cd would worth for a end user as well as for a domainer.

I am pretty sure that if a service is been built around these domain for selling music albums or making an image bank like getty images, they would do good as it would be easily brandable and more importantly easily rememberable.

What happens when CDs are as obsolete as 78 rpm records, and 8-track tape?

I would think they would go for .music or .tunes, though Apple would likely want to grab the latter methinks: for an i.tunes domain.

I think no one will ever try to develop a website with a domain name "songs.music" as it won't be catchy or easy to remember either & most important of all it won't make much of sense.

e.g.
Songs.cd
=> "Songs CD Website/Songs CD Download website"
It's the first thing that come to mind, when i read the domain as whole with the extension, same applies with Images/Image.cd

But the extension won't go good with the keyword "job". Job/Jobs.cd wont make any sense for a end-user though a domainer might buy it thinking as a pure keyword domain.

In the same way, when we say

Songs.music => "?????"

What do i refer to when i read the domain name as whole.
It won't make much as of a sense.

Also in our normal life when we actualy speak, we still refer DVD as a CD.

For an normal user anything that plays songs, movies, games is a CD, only a tech savy guy actualy knows the difference between a CD & DVD.

So when a guy/gal speak to his/her friend asking for a movie CD, DVD.

He/She says "Joe/Jane do you have that CD?"

I hope I was able to make my point clear winksmile

If the web had been here (in its present form) some 20 or 30 years ago, they might have chosen songs.tape or songs.LP back then.

See how obsolete, that now looks?

I buy and sell cds, among other things, and .cd is definitely on its way out ... unless you are just selling collectors' items.

I've never heard anyone use the term 'cd' to describe a DVD. Maybe they might for blank discs, but I've only ever heard DVD or video for the recorded product

I suspect you've had a great idea ... but 7 years too late!

(or whenever Napster started ...).
