Hi,
I got my website up and running just 3 months ago now and I am really not very technical at all.
I've managed to get a page rank of 2 and I am working on increasing this.
If I type a specific product into googe eg. childrens blackbird costume - then I often appear on page 1 or 2 of google.
However, the thing I'm finding really difficult is how to get on page one for a general phrase eg. childrens animal costumes or childrens disney costumes. I have been tweaking things and trying to do this by trial and error but could do with advice on what to do next.
Thanks

welcome to the seo world karen
to rank for specific terms is easier then the general terms and dont focus to much on pagerank it doesn't mean much when it comes to ranking, finding links from relevant sources is more important. If you want to rank well for a specific term(keyword) then you should put them (terms) in all the important places such as the TITLE,META DESCRIPTIONS,HEADINGS but just make sure it does not look spammy and is easy to read for your visitors.

Thanks for the advice - I will check through my titles and descriptions etc.
One thing I could do with some clarification on though......I understand very clearly what and where the meta tag title and description are and how to alter.
However I have seen a few people mentioning the H1 heading and the ALT tag. When I view my page source I can clearly see the meta title and meta desciption but not the H1 heading - maybe it is there but I just don't know what I am looking for? What exactly is this.
Also can someone pls confirm that the ALT tag is just the desciption which I give to my images when i upload them to my website and that it is better to give them a good content name rather than just say a number etc.
Thanks

the H1 tag is the main Heading there is also H2,H3 etc..
with H1 being the most important heading, if you cant find it maybe look at your web page 'source view' if you dont know you click the right mouse button on a web page and go to 'view source' there look for the <H1> </H1> tag, the ALT is the sentence you can add to a pic on your website that descibes the pic like this " blah.jpg" alt="blah blah picture">, it can help with the optimization ,just make sure you dont stuff your page with full of keywords that would be spammy just focus each page for 1-2 in my opinion
