social media optimization is not time waisting. its really helpful if you do it properly. article syndication is also good for traffic generation.

We’ve seen people talking a lot about twitter being a “lifestream” of sorts where you can shout out to people on what you are doing by giving out small status update messages. But, not many have actually talked a lot about how Twitter can help you in marketing your product or brand and become an effective channel for Social Media Marketing.

Well, social media traffic is only good for developing loyal fans and boosting alexa. Other than that, it is crap and you need to focus on organic traffic. That is traffic that converts.

Twitter can be an effective communication tool for an Affiliate Program Manager for a quick promo update, promo teaser, etc.

Doing social media optimization as a business strategy is not a waste of time. In fact it is a cost-effective strategy to increase your sites visibility and page rank.
In short, SMO is the process of optimising a website so that its content can be easily spread on the Net by the website's own visitors to off-site social and online communities - basically making it "socially friendly". The most common example is adding social bookmarks, trackbacks and widgets to a site's page, such as "add to del.ici.ous" links and the MyBlogLog widget. But it doesn't stop there.
